SATURDAY 18th MARCH 2017
Welcome to the Turangawaewae Regatta 2017!
Planning is well and truly underway for the 122st Regatta and we are very excited about working with the wider community to help bring together an extremely successful cultural event. An event that is the second oldest regatta in the South Pacific and Australia.
2017 will see the Turangawaewae Regatta split over three days. 15th March 2017 will see the waka kopapa racing for primary schools with waka kopapa racing for intermediate schools happening on 16th March 2017. The main regatta day will occur Saturday 18th March 2017.
The Turangawaewae Regatta is very much an integral part of the history of Ngaruawahia and a tradition for New Zealand as a whole. It’s the only Maori acquatic carnival of it’s kind and the only regular event when Waka Taua or Maori War Canoes take to the water.
This annual event is hosted under the patronage of the Maori King, Kingi Tuheitia and in essence the regatta encapsulates the bringing of all peoples together to share the cultural wonder that is the Turangawaewae Regatta.
Nau mai, haere mai!
